Get Your Greens In!
With Dr. Candice Todd Naturopathic Doctor
Fruits and vegetables are packed with fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants! They help to keep your weight under control, keep your bowel movements regular and are an integral part in disease prevention. For all you parents out there frustrated by your child’s less than enthusiastic response to broccoli and spinach on their plates, here are my top three tips to get more greens in their bellies and yours!
First, did you know that according to the Center for Disease Control, only 1 in 10 adults are eating enough fruits and vegetables? That’s a mere 10%! How can we expect our kids to get their greens in, if their parents aren’t? Parents, lead by example! Children take in more information from you than you know!
Involve your children in meal preparation! When they have a hand in making it, they’re more likely to eat it. Have the kids prepare a side salad that the whole family can enjoy. Take it up a notch by adding toppings like sunflower seeds, dried cranberries, diced avocado or fresh berries.
Finally, if all else fails, hide them! Mix chopped veggies like kale, spinach, mushrooms and peppers in tomato sauces or add greens to a blended smoothie. These are yummy ways to up your vitamin and mineral intake. Need some inspiration? Try this delicious Tropical Green Smoothie recipe:
- 1 cup frozen or fresh pineapple
- 1 small to medium banana (ripe and peeled)
- 1 inch piece of ginger
- 2 handfuls of spinach
- 1 cup water or coconut water
PRO TIP:Freeze them into smoothie pops for a cool summer treat!
