Hi my name is Mathias “Matthew”. I am a CanFitPro PTS since 2009 and I am one of the Health Coaches at The Health Institute. My personal training journey really only started when I took on a part-time job as the marketing director at an interactive gym in Vaughan under a talented off ice conditioning coach and gym owner. He showed and taught me a lot when it came to professional and semi-professional training. It was also he who helped me to pursue and retain my Personal Training Certification. This was a great accomplishment for myself as I was always interested in professional fighting and martial arts at a young age and as I got older, I learned and realized that the most important part of being a great fighter lies in the ability to be more fluid and move efficiently.

During this period in my life, in the daytime I was managing employees at a call centre and during the evenings and weekends, I was training clients at the gym. After I had left my job at the gym in Vaughan, where I got my start in training and coaching, I transitioned into in-home training with clients. I did in-home training for a couple of years on my own but eventually stopped when I was promoted in the call centre as this new role did not allow me to continue to work in a call centre and do in-home training with my clients at the same time. Once again I was stuck in this call centre rut but was soon later laid off due to the company’s decision to move their business overseas. Even though this was the case and I was in the corporate world for 14 years in the call centre operation and management, it was a blessing in disguise because it lead me right here to THI, where I am today. I had received an opportunity to meet with Dr. J at The Facility to get my start here as a Health Coach and the rest is history.

As a trainer I have always stressed the importance of having a balance in life, work and play. If you play hard, work hard and/or party hard, you need to take the time to take care of your body, both inside and out. Take care of your body and it will take care of you for as long as it’s supposed to.
